After photographing hundreds of professionals throughout Orange County — from Fullerton to San Clemente, from Yorba Linda to Newport Beach — I’ve seen the same headshot mistakes come up again and again. Here’s what to avoid.
Using a selfie. I understand the impulse — selfies are easy and immediate. But no matter how good your phone camera is, a selfie lacks the lighting, perspective, and framing of a professional photograph. The distortion alone (from holding a phone close to your face) can make even the most photogenic person look a little off. Invest in a real session.
An outdated photo. If your headshot is more than two or three years old, or if your appearance has changed significantly, it’s time for an update. Showing up to a client meeting looking noticeably different from your photo erodes trust — even if nobody says anything about it.
A background that distracts. Brick walls are overdone. Chaotic outdoor scenes pull the eye away from you. And please — no bathroom mirrors. A clean, simple background keeps the focus where it belongs: your face.
Bad lighting. This is the single biggest technical difference between a professional headshot and a snapshot. Harsh overhead lighting, shadows across the face, or light that’s too flat — these issues can make even a confident, attractive person look tired or untrustworthy. Proper lighting is an art form.
Not looking like yourself. This one’s tricky. Some people over-prepare — they get a blowout, put on a full face of makeup, wear something they’d never wear to work — and the result looks like a costume. Your headshot should feel like you on a great day, not a version of you that’s unrecognizable.
Avoiding these five mistakes is step one. Step two is booking a session with a photographer who can guide you through the whole process. That’s exactly what I do for professionals all over Orange County every day.
