One of the most common questions I get from clients before their headshot session is: “What should I wear?” It’s a great question, and it makes a bigger difference than most people realize.
Here’s what I always tell my clients in Orange County — dress for the job you want, not just the job you have. Think about who’s going to be looking at your headshot. If you’re a real estate agent in Laguna Beach, you want to look approachable yet polished. If you’re a corporate attorney in Irvine, you want authority and professionalism. Your outfit needs to speak to your audience before you even open your mouth.
Some practical tips that work really well for OC headshots:
Solid colors photograph beautifully. Navy, deep burgundy, forest green, and charcoal are particularly flattering on camera. Bright whites can wash you out, and busy patterns can distract from your face — which is the whole point of a headshot.
Layers add depth and dimension to your look. A blazer over a simple top is a classic for a reason. It works for both men and women and immediately reads as “polished professional.”
Avoid large logos or trendy statement pieces that might date your photo quickly. You want this headshot to work for you for the next couple of years.
Bring options. I always recommend clients bring two or three outfit choices to their session. We have great light here in Southern California, and sometimes seeing the options together helps us make the best choice.
And yes, I’m talking to the guys too — please don’t show up in a wrinkled shirt. If you’re not sure if something needs ironing, it does.
My sessions for Orange County professionals are designed to be collaborative. We figure out what works best for you, your industry, and your personal brand. Whether you’re in Fountain Valley, Brea, or San Clemente, I’m here to make the whole process easy and even enjoyable.
